Meet the School Board: Kami Wait

Encouraging students to reach their potential is of utmost important to Concord School Board member Kami Wait.

“Every soul that walks through our doors deserves the best we can give them. It is important that we meet them where they are at, help them see where they can go, and stretch them individually,” she said.

Wait was elected to the school board in November 2012 and took office in January 2013. Born in Elkhart, she attended Concord East Side Elementary and Concord Junior High School before graduating from Concord High School in 1995.

Her husband, Aaron, is a 1996 Concord graduate and together, the couple is raising a third generation of Concord students — Katelyn “Kay”, a 2019 graduate, and Zakary “Zak”, a current CHS student.

“Aaron’s parents also graduated from Concord. I love that our children are third-generation Concord students. Our families and love for this community have kept us here,” Wait said.

Wait is a certified health and transformational coach, as well as a personal trainer. In this role, she works with clients to help them make sound nutritional choices, navigate stress, and uncover their potential. Her hobbies include reading, meditation/reflection, exercise, hiking, travel, family game night, and spending time with family and friends.

Wait’s path toward the school board included serving as a SOAR volunteer, PTO president, and paraprofessional at Concord Ox Bow Elementary.

“I loved seeing students’ smiles and their eagerness to learn and be connected. No matter what they were going through they needed to know they were important and safe, and that together we were going to ‘get it’ no matter what that ‘it’ was,” she said.

Through her school board service, Wait has gained a better understanding of how laws and regulations affect schools.

“Before being a board member, I had a limited frame to look through. That made it easy to assume I understood something that now I know wasn’t the case,” she said.

Wait said she is always impressed how the Concord staff “gives with grit and love for their kiddos and school.”

“Concord holds a special place in my heart,” Wait said. “It is an honor to dedicate my time, along with so many others, focused on what makes Concord great, and continuing with that greatness so we can be even better.”
